More Amphisbaenae

Description

Some small paintings of a few more of Vishnu's stranger "vertebrates".

Top:
Here we see Natualimax turpis, a member of the Amphisbaenian class Scalmuserpens. Scalmuserpens are small, derived, rather compact amphisbaenae related fairly closely to Pilulaserpens. This group is characterized by stiff oar-like "arms" and a purely aquatic lifestyle. Here they excel, able to rapidly change direction to chase prey or avoid becoming it themselves. N. turpis in particular is a tiny predator, using its derived primary anterior palp to skewer and subdue potential meals.

Bottom:
Another example of the diverse class Toruiscipios, Microconstrictor vulgaris is a middling predator of the forest understory. Small, slow, and incredibly venomous M. vulgaris uses its primary palp to inject a potent venom, then uses its modified secondary palps to hold its prey in place while it feeds. Though slow to move M. vulgaris is incredibly fast to strike and has been known to cripple or kill unwary human researchers.
